Summary

1984 follows a period of life of the unorthodox party member simply named Winston.
The world he lives in is divided into three distinct ever-warring states, Eurasia, Eastasia, and Oceania, with the latter the country of Winstons origin. In Oceania the people rule under the principle of Ingsoc and the powerful influence of the inner party and the omnipresent figure known as Big Brother. Winston is helpless but to feel like some human right is being denied of him, and begins frequenting with the lower class proles. On one such occasion he comes across an old trinket store and bought a notebook, a lost artifact of better times, and from that moment on Winston had committed the felony of thoughtcrime, which ensures a fate worse than death. Over time Winston makes connections with people he feels have the same opinions about the party that he does, but which of these will prosper and bring him newfound joy to life and which will bring him the greatest suffering that he has ever known is something you will have to read the book to find out!
